China's high-speed rail network is one of the easiest ways to travel between major cities, but foreign visitors should pay close attention to station names, timing, passport rules, and transfer routes.
1. Check the exact station name
Many cities have several train stations. Beijing South, Beijing West, Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Railway Station, Chengdu East, and Chengdu South are not interchangeable. Always check the exact departure and arrival station before booking.
2. Keep your passport ready
Foreign visitors should keep the same passport used for booking available when entering the station and boarding. Do not pack it deep inside luggage.
3. Arrive earlier than you think
Major stations can be large, with security checks, ticket gates, waiting halls, and long walking distances. A relaxed buffer is better than a perfect minute-by-minute plan.
4. Plan the station-to-hotel route
The train ride is only part of the trip. Save the metro, taxi, or ride-hailing route from your arrival station to the hotel. Station exits can be confusing in a new city.
5. Pack for easy movement
High-speed trains are comfortable, but moving through stations is easier with luggage you can handle yourself. If you are traveling with family, plan more time for elevators and station navigation.
Common tourist mistakes
- Booking the wrong station in a large city.
- Leaving too little time between hotel checkout and train departure.
- Not saving Chinese station names.
- Assuming every taxi driver understands English station names.
- Forgetting to keep passports accessible.
