7-Day China Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

A simple one-week plan for travelers who want major cities, local food, high-speed trains, and fewer arrival-day surprises.

A first China trip works best when the route is focused. Instead of trying to see five or six cities, spend one week on two strong bases: Shanghai for modern China and local neighborhoods, then Beijing for history, food, and classic landmarks.

Best route for a first week

For most first-time visitors, the easiest route is Shanghai for three days, a high-speed train to Beijing, then Beijing for three to four days. This keeps transport simple while still giving a strong contrast between modern city life and historic China.

Day 1: Arrival in Shanghai

Use the first day to settle in. Confirm your hotel address in Chinese, test Alipay or WeChat Pay, save your nearest metro station, and walk one easy area such as the Bund, Xintiandi, or a nearby food street.

Days 2-3: Shanghai neighborhoods and local food

Spend one day on classic Shanghai highlights and one day on local neighborhoods. A student guide can help visitors find restaurants, order food, understand QR codes, and avoid spending the whole trip inside tourist zones.

Day 4: High-speed train to Beijing

High-speed trains are comfortable, but station names matter. Confirm the departure station, arrival station, passport requirement, and hotel transfer before you leave. Build in extra time because major stations are large.

Days 5-6: Beijing history and city life

Use these two days for Beijing's historic core, hutong neighborhoods, local food, and one major landmark day. Keep the schedule realistic. Distances can be longer than they look on a map.

Day 7: Flexible buffer day

Keep the final day flexible. Use it for shopping, a food walk, a museum, a slower neighborhood, or a backup plan if weather changes. The best first trip often includes one unplanned local discovery.
