China SIM Card, eSIM, and Mobile Data Guide for Tourists

Choose a reliable internet plan before you need maps, payments, translation, or taxi help.

Mobile data is not just a convenience in China. It affects maps, payment apps, hotel messages, train updates, QR menus, translation, and ride-hailing. A good first-day internet plan removes a lot of stress.

1. Compare roaming, eSIM, and local SIM

International roaming is simple but can be expensive. eSIM plans can be convenient if your phone supports them. Local SIM cards may offer strong domestic coverage, but you may need passport registration and time at an airport or phone shop.

2. Check whether your phone supports eSIM

Not every phone model supports eSIM, and some phones support eSIM only in specific regions. Check your exact phone model before buying a plan.

3. Keep your home number available

Some accounts may send verification codes to your home number. If possible, keep your home SIM active for SMS or prepare account recovery methods before leaving.

4. Download offline information

Before your flight, save your hotel address, airport-to-hotel route, train station name, booking confirmations, and emergency contacts as screenshots. Offline screenshots are useful when airport Wi-Fi is slow or your SIM setup takes longer than expected.

5. Test data before leaving the airport

Open maps, payment apps, translation, and your messaging app before you leave the airport or station. If mobile data is not working, solve it while you still have staff, Wi-Fi, and time.

6. Plan for app verification

Payments, ride-hailing, hotel apps, and train platforms may ask for SMS or account verification. Do not change too many account settings while tired after a long flight.

7. Know that some overseas apps may behave differently

Some apps or services you use at home may not work the same way in China. Prepare local alternatives for maps, communication, payment, and transport so your trip does not depend on one app.
